Olympic Games Background
The Olympic Games are considered the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating in it. The Olympic Games are held every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating by occurring every four years but two years apart.
Normally Olympics games referred to summer Olympics, where larger number of countries & sportsman or women participates. We are discussing about summer Olympic games in this article
Olympic Games or Olympics is inspired by ancient Olympic games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. In 1894 International Olympic Committee (IOC) is founded by “Baron Pierre de Coubertin” and it organized the first modern Olympics Games in Athens in 1896.
The Games of 1896 brought together 14 nations and 241 athletes who competed in 43 events. As on date, the latest summer Olympics was held in 2016, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and commonly known as Rio 2016. More than 11,000 athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees took part and With 306 sets of medals, the games featured 28 Olympic sports .
The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement, with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority.
India sent its first Olympic team to the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, some twenty years after a single athlete (Norman Pritchard) competed for India in 1900.
So far ( upto year 2017 ) , India has won only 28 medals ( National Team -11 & Individual – 17 ) in the 24 Olympic games that it has participated in since 1900. Of these, nine ( 9 ) were gold, ( 6) six silver, and 11 were bronze.
Games which has won medal ( 28 ) for us are –
Wrestling – 5, Men’s 200 meter Atheletics – 2, Field Hockey Team – 11, Tennis – 1, Weightlifting -1, Shooting -4, Boxing -2, Badminton – 2.
